I admittedly have a hard time making design decisions. Building a new house and designing the ENTIRE thing was a little exhausting. My range hood, for example, has undergone a few transformations since I built it. To be honest, there was nothing hanging above my oven for over six months. When I finally decided what should go there, it started out short and light. Then I added some height and a slightly darker stain. Now, it matches my the white of my cabinets. I left the bottom trim piece wood to give my black walnut island a little wink on the other side of the kitchen.

Here is what she looks like now:
If you didn’t know, my range hood was originally born of scrap wood I had laying around after my husband and I finished building our house. The things I didn’t have on hand, I picked up at the local Habitat for Humanity Restore.
The original design looked like this:
It’s been a while since I’ve looked at these photos. We’ve done some other projects to the kitchen that I almost completely forgot about. The “backsplash” in this photo is just a vinyl wallpaper that I stuck up there because I (again) couldn’t make a design decision on what I wanted the permanent backsplash to look like.
The range hood stayed short for about a year, when I decided that I wanted to take advantage of the cathedral ceiling and make the range hood go all the way to the top. I used the same plywood materials and cut them to fit over the same box and match the slope of the ceiling at the peak.
This is what it looked like when it was finished. I will forever remember this project because I did it in just one day while my daughter was finishing up her last day of kindergarten!
After a while, I started to feel like the kitchen felt dark. I finally tore down my temporary wallpaper backsplash (that was a steady resident of my kitchen for almost 3 years) and added subway tile with a feature square above the range.
Forgive the lighting on this one. This was an in-progress photo. I needed one more piece of border tile and the bottom row of subway to finish the tiling. I find myself too busy with trying to do get the job done and forget to take pictures. This feature was one giant, painful, math problem!
After the tile was done, the range hood felt extra dark to me. Covid-19 quarantine finally got to me and I whipped out a paintbrush to make a change.
Excuse the mess. Excuse my face. Things get torn up when I get in the mood for projects…
This is where the range hood is now. I actually had a few moments of severe regret. Initially, I hated the white. It felt like too much. I wanted to rip it down and start over. I’m glad I didn’t, because now I kind of love it. See, just more proof that I’m horribly indecisive!
